Accident Summary:
The aircraft was on a DCS mission. At approximately 1352 hours, the aircraft commander proceeded to Nui Ba Den Mountain. Upon arrival, the aircraft commander flew around the mountain two or three times in a counter-clockwise direction. A broken cloud condition obscured the top of the peak, but the pad (east side) was clear. The aircraft commander elected to make his approach to the northwest which he did without incident. The winds obtained from Air Force weather after the accident were 290 degrees at 20 knots at an altitude of 3000 feet (elevation of Nui Ba Den Mountain is 3235 feet, the helipad is at approximately 3100 feet.). The aircraft remained running on the pad for about five minutes while the radios were exchanged. Prior to completing the radio exchange, the commanding officer of the signal detachment asked the aircraft commander if he could handle an immediate medevac. The aircraft commander said he could, but would have to drop off one of the three passengers he had aboard. The commanding officer, a Captain, left, returning shortly, and told the aircraft commander to clear the pad for a medevac chopper and resupply chopper which were orbiting. WO Bohlinger complied, after making a hover check at 3 feet. During hover, the RPM did not bleed off, and all instruments were in the green. Bohlinger elected to depart to the northwest and break right, since this afforded the lowest obstacle clearance. About 20 meters off the pad, while attempting an airspeed over altitude departure, the aircraft started sinking. More power was applied by WO Bohlinger and the helicopter started into translational, came back out, and continued sinking. During this period, the aircraft commander was on a north easterly heading. WO Peters called the RPM at 5800, and WO Bohlinger saw he was not going to clear the trees and flared the aircraft. The aircraft struck a tree with the right front nose. The aircraft did not burn. The aircraft was carrying three passengers, a crew of four, approximately 850-900 pounds of fuel, and a half filled FOG oil tank. Density altitude at the crash site was approximately 4600 feet, and the approximate gross weight of the aircraft was 8700 pounds
