AT 0945 HRS ON 1 JUN 70, AIRCRAFT SN 66-16703 LEFT ITS HOME STATION, CO B, 101ST AVN BN (AH), CAMP EAGLE, RVN, WITH WO1 JOSEPH E. REILLY AS THE AIRCRAFT COMMANDER AND 1LT CARLOS M. POLANCO AS HIS PILOT. THE AIRCRAFT AND ITS CREW REPORTED TO THE RETORT PAD, LOCATED AT CAMP EAGLE, RVN, FOR A BRIEFING CONCERNING THE "SNIFFER" MISSION THEY WOULD BE PERFORMING THAT DAY. RENDEXVOUSED WITH THE COMMAND AND CONTROL AIRCRAFT FLOWN BY CPT FRAZIER AND THE ARMED ESCORT WHICH WAS TO PROVIDE THE GUN COVER NORMALLY USED ON SUCH MISSIONS. THE COMMAND AND CONTROL AIRCRAFT AHD THE O.I.C. IN THE BACK SEAT, HIS MAIN FUNCTION BEING TO COORDINATE THE FLIGHT PATH OF THE SNIFFER AIRCRAFT, IN THIS CASE AIRCRAFT 66-16703, AND TO INSURE THAT THE SNIFFER AIRCRAFT DID NOT EXTEND OR FLY OVER THE AREA NOT TO BE COVERED. ONCE THE FLIGHT OF AIRCRAFT REACHED THE AREA TO BE INVESTIGATED, THE SNIFFER AIRCRAFT WAS GIVEN PERMISSION BY THE COMMAND AND CONTROL AIRCRAFT TO GO LOW LEVEL AND PROCEED WITH THE MISSION. THE MISSION HAD CONTINUED FOR APPROXIMATELY 10 MINUTES AND THE AIRCRAFT WAS FOLLOWING THE PERFURME RIVER WHEN, FLYING AT CONTOUR ALTITUDE, THE AIRCRAFT STRUCK A DEAD TREE STICKING OUT ABOVE THE JUNGLE. THE AIRCRAFT WAS FLYING AT APPROXIMATELY 70-80 KNOTS AND WAS IN A RIGHT HAND BANK WHEN IT STRUCK THE TREE. THE TREE, APPROXIMATELY 6-8" IN DIAMETER BROKE BOTH FRONT CHIN BUBBLES (SEE PHOTOGRAPHS 1) AND CONTINUED ALONG THE UNDERSIDE OF THE AIRCRAFT (SEE PHOTOGRAPHS 2 & 3) UNTIL IT STRUCK THE TAILBOOM (SEE PHOTOGRAPH 4), AND SUBSEQUENTLY BROKE OFF AFTER STRIKING THE LEFT INBOARD PORTION OF THE SYNCRONIZED ELEVATOR (SEE PHOTOGRAPH 5). VIBRATIONS IN THE AIRCRAFT EVEN THOUGH THE CHIN BUBBLES WERE BROKEN AND HE CONSEQUENTLY CONTINUED WITH THE MISSION UNTIL IT WAS COMPLETED. ONCE THE MISSION WAS COMPLETED, THE AIRCRAFT LANDED AT FSB BIRMINGHAM (COORDINATES YD 707103). IT WAS AT THIS TIME THAT THE DAMAGE TO THE TAIL BOOM AND SINC ELEVATOR WAS NOTICED.
