War Story:
According to the Duty Officers Log for S-3 1st Avn Bn at Phu Loi on 28 Apr 69 item number 10 at 0810 hours, 852 was down at LK Red Ball pad with extensive bullet damage 8 holes pilot Mr. Lurvey injured also door gunner SSGT Gray injured. Item number 14 at 1345 hours, A/C fire incident & hit reports 1. A Co 1st Avn Bn 66-16852 0800 XT585363 take off from LZ, 40 feet alt auto weapons small arms cal 30 intense continued to fly mission not completed 4 injuries 8 hits. Mission was cancelled do to lack of aircraft. CW2 William A. Lurvey was medivaced to Japan Yokoto AFB. Bill remembers that the Aircraft commander was shot in the neck or shoulder. Bill was shot in the head, and the crew chief was shot and the gunner had scrapnel. He said that he remembers getting the chopper to the airbase and someone told him that when they brought in the crane to take it off of the runway, it collapsed. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Purple Heart. He was completely paralyzed on the left side, but with a lot of guts and hard work, he walks with a slight limp, and is able to use his arm with not much problem. from Margo Lurvey, wife, 4 Jun 96
