Accident Summary:

AT APPROXIMATELY 1350 ON 15 JUNE 69, AIRCRAFT 273 WAS ON A MISSION TO SWITCH RADIO TEAMS ON LZ ELIZABETH. THE PAD IS 6,200 FEET HIGH AND IS NORMALLY COVERED BY CLOUDS. THE WINDS WERE EXTREMELY VARIABLE AND FREQUENTLY CHANGE 180 DEGREES IN A MATTER OF SECOND. THE A/C HAD THE PEOPLE POP SMOKE SO HE COULD SET THE DIRECTION AND VELOCITY OF THE WIND. AT THE TIME IT WAS COMING OUT OF THE SOUTHEAST AT 8-5 KTS. AFTER LANDING AND PICKING UP FOUR PASSENGERS, THE AIRCRAFT WAS CHECKED AT A HOVER. IT REQUIRED 37-38 LBS. OF TORQUE TO MAINTAIN A HIGH HOVER. AT 6,200 FEET AND 20 DEGREES C., ALLOWABLE GROSS WEIGHT IS APPROXIMATELY 8,400 LBS. AND ABOUT 39 LBS OF TORQUE ARE AVAILABLE (ACCORDING TO THE -10). IT IS ABOUT 35 METERS FROM THE PAD TO 40-50 FOOT OBSTRUCTIONS. THIS INDICATES THAT ADDITIONAL POWER HAD TO BE PULLED TO CLEAR THE OBSTRUCTIONS. NO ADDITIONAL CHECKS WERE MADE PRIOR TO TAKE-OFF. WHEN THE AIRCRAFT STARTED MOVING SOUTHEAST, THE RPM BLED TO ABOUT 6,500 WHICH INDICATES THAT ALL AVAILABLE POWER WAS BEING USED. ADDITIONAL POWER WAS REQUIRED TO CLEAR THE TREES. AT THIS POINT IT APPEARED THE AIRCRAFT WAS CAUGHT IN A SLIGHT DOWN DRAFT, AND HAD NO RESERVE POWER TO COPE WITH IT. THE AIRCRAFT SETTLED INTO THE TREES AFTER ALL EFFECTIVE POWER WAS USED. THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO REST ON ITS LEFT SIDE. THERE WERE NO APPARENT MECHANICAL FAILURES OR MALFUNCTIONS THAT WOULD HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE ACCIDENT.\\
